QWhat is the heat resistance of ABS?
ABS has a heat deflection temperature of 95°C at 1.82 MPa and a continuous use temperature of approximately 85°C. This is sufficient for most consumer electronics, automotive interiors, and appliance applications. For higher temperature environments, glass-filled ABS grades can raise HDT to 110°C, or polycarbonate (135°C) may be a better choice.
QWhat is the impact strength of ABS?
Standard ABS has a notched Izod impact strength of approximately 200 J/m, which is excellent for an engineering thermoplastic. High-impact ABS grades can reach 400 J/m or higher and retain toughness at sub-zero temperatures. This impact resistance, combined with good rigidity, is why ABS is the preferred material for consumer housings and protective cases.
QIs ABS chrome platable?
Yes. ABS is one of the best plastics for electroplating and chrome plating. Its chemical structure allows reliable adhesion of metal layers (nickel, chromium) without special surface activation. Chrome-plated ABS is widely used in automotive trim, plumbing fixtures, and premium consumer electronics. Pre-treatment includes etching, neutralising, catalysing, and electroless copper plating before final chrome deposition.
QIs ABS flame retardant?
Standard ABS is not flame retardant and will burn. However, flame-retardant ABS grades rated UL94 V-0 are readily available. These grades use halogen-free or brominated flame retardant additives to achieve self-extinguishing performance, making them suitable for electrical enclosures, appliance housings, and electronics that must meet fire safety standards.
QIs ABS food grade?
Standard ABS is not FDA approved for food contact. However, food-grade ABS is available — manufactured with FDA-compliant additives, colorants, and processing aids. Food-grade ABS is suitable for food containers, kitchenware, and food-contact components. If your application requires food contact certification, specify food-grade ABS at quoting and request material compliance documentation.
QWhat is the shrinkage rate of ABS?
ABS shrinks 0.5–0.7% during cooling, which is relatively low and predictable for a thermoplastic. This low shrinkage makes ABS easy to mould with tight tolerances (±0.1 mm). Glass-filled ABS grades reduce shrinkage further to 0.2–0.4% and improve dimensional stability. Mold design compensates for shrinkage in the cavity, so final parts meet dimensional specifications.
