Medical-Grade Sheet Metal Materials

Material selection for medical sheet metal is dictated by biocompatibility standards, patient contact duration, and sterilization requirements. All materials include mill certificates and ASTM compliance documentation.

316L Stainless Steel

The gold standard for medical-grade sheet metal. 316L offers superior corrosion resistance, excellent biocompatibility, and low carbon content for enhanced weldability. Resists pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich physiological environments.

Mechanical: Tensile: 485 MPa min | Elongation: 40% | Density: 7.99 g/cm³

Biocompatibility: ASTM F138 — Implant grade stainless steel for surgical implants and instruments. Biocompatible for prolonged tissue contact.

Applications: Surgical instruments, implant tooling, equipment housings, sterile-field brackets

Titanium Alloy Ti-6Al-4V

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) delivers the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any medical metal. Exceptionally biocompatible with osseointegration properties, it is virtually inert in the human body and causes no allergic reactions.

Mechanical: Tensile: 950 MPa | Elongation: 14% | Density: 4.43 g/cm³ (lightweight)

Biocompatibility: ASTM F136 — Implant grade titanium for long-term surgical implants. No cytotoxicity, no sensitization, MRI compatible.

Applications: Surgical robot components, implant assist parts, lightweight diagnostic brackets

304 Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steel widely used for non-implant medical equipment. Good corrosion resistance and formability at a lower cost than 316L. Not suitable for implantable devices or prolonged patient contact.

Mechanical: Tensile: 520 MPa | Elongation: 40% | Density: 7.93 g/cm³

Biocompatibility: Non-implant grade. Suitable for equipment housings and external components not in patient contact or sterile fields.

Applications: Equipment enclosures, hospital bed accessories, lab equipment housings

ISO 13485 Quality System

Medical sheet metal parts require a controlled, documented, and auditable quality system. Our ISO 13485 certified processes ensure every part meets medical device regulatory requirements.

ISO 13485 Certified

Our quality management system is certified to ISO 13485:2016 — the international standard for medical device quality systems. Every process from design transfer through production and traceability is governed by documented procedures and controlled records.

Full Material Traceability

Every coil and sheet of raw material is tracked from mill to finished part. Material certificates include heat numbers, chemical composition (C, Cr, Ni, Mo), mechanical properties, and compliance to ASTM/F138/F136 standards. No material enters production without verified mill certs.

Device History Record (DHR)

Each production batch generates a complete Device History Record linking the work order, material certs, process parameters, inspection results, operator signatures, and nonconformance dispositions. The DHR is retained for a minimum of 10 years and available on request.

First Article Inspection (AS9102)

A full first article inspection is performed to AS9102 format before any production run. Every dimension, feature, and specification on the drawing is verified and recorded with the measuring instrument used, operator, and pass/fail result.

Cleanroom Compatible Packaging

Finished parts are cleaned, passivated, and packaged in a controlled environment. Double-bagged in medical-grade peel pouches with sterilization indicators, packaged in ISO Class 8 (100,000) cleanroom conditions, and labeled with lot/batch and sterilization compatibility.

Sterilization Compatibility

All medical sheet metal parts are validated for compatibility with autoclave steam sterilization (134°C, 3.5 bar), ethylene oxide (EtO) gas, and gamma irradiation (25–40 kGy). Material selection and surface finishes are documented for each sterilization method.

Medical Sheet Metal Design Guidelines

Follow these DFM rules to ensure your medical parts are biocompatible, sterilizable, and manufacturable to ISO 13485 requirements. Proper material and finish specification is critical for regulatory compliance.

DFM Tips for Medical Parts

  • Specify 316L (ASTM F138) for any part with patient contact or in the sterile field. Use 304 only for external, non-contact equipment.
  • Design for sterilization: autoclave at 134°C requires materials and finishes that survive repeated thermal cycling without corrosion or discoloration.
  • Minimize particulate traps: avoid blind holes, deep crevices, and overlapping joints in sterile-zone parts. Use smooth, drainable geometries.
  • Passivation (ASTM A967) is mandatory on all 316L and 304 medical parts. Specify the passivation type (Nitric 2 recommended) on your drawing.
  • Avoid sharp edges entirely — all edges must be deburred with a minimum 0.3mm radius to prevent glove tears and tissue injury during handling.
  • For MRI-compatible parts, specify Titanium Ti-6Al-4V (ASTM F136) or 316L stainless — both are non-ferromagnetic and safe for MRI environments.

Medical Surface Finishing Requirements

Surface finishes for medical sheet metal are not cosmetic — they are functional and regulatory requirements. Passivation is mandatory; electropolishing is specified for patient-contact surfaces.

ProcessStandardPurpose
PassivationASTM A967 (Nitric 2)Mandatory for all medical 316L/304 parts. Removes free iron from the surface, enriches chromium oxide passive layer, and maximizes corrosion resistance. Verified by copper sulfate or salt spray test.
ElectropolishingRa 0.1μmElectrochemically removes a micro-layer of metal, producing a mirror-smooth, passive, and sanitary surface. Eliminates micro-burrs, reduces bacterial adhesion, and enhances biocompatibility for patient-contact surfaces.
Mechanical PolishingRa 0.4μmRemoves surface imperfections and tool marks via abrasive polishing. Used for non-contact equipment surfaces where a smooth, cleanable finish is needed but electropolishing cost is not justified.
Tumbling / DeburringAll burrs removedVibratory or centrifugal tumbling removes all edge burrs from laser cutting and stamping. Mandatory before passivation. Ensures no loose metal particles enter the medical device assembly.

Passivation is performed on every medical 316L and 304 part without exception. Electropolishing is recommended for any surface in direct or indirect patient contact.

What Drives Medical Sheet Metal Cost?

Medical sheet metal parts carry a 50–100% premium over commercial-grade fabrication due to certified materials, ISO 13485 compliance, and documentation requirements.

Medical-Grade Material Premium

316L ASTM F138 and Ti-6Al-4V ASTM F136 certified materials cost 50–100% more than commercial grades due to implant-grade testing, biocompatibility certification, and low-volume mill sourcing.

ISO 13485 Compliance Cost

Every medical order carries overhead for DHR documentation, material traceability systems, controlled processes, and quality audits that non-medical parts do not require.

Traceability & Documentation

Mill certificates, heat number tracking, FAI reports, and batch records add cost per order. Required for regulatory submission and audit compliance, retained for 10+ years.

Small Batch Prototype Premium

Medical prototypes often run in quantities of 1–25. The fixed cost of material certification, setup, and documentation is spread over fewer parts, raising per-part cost significantly.

Cost by Part Type and Medical Premium

Part TypeStandard RangeMedical PremiumLead Time
Simple Bracket / Mount$8 – $25 / part+60–100%2 – 3 weeks
Equipment Housing / Enclosure$25 – $80 / part+50–80%2 – 3 weeks
Surgical Instrument Component$15 – $60 / part+70–120%2 – 3 weeks
Precision Diagnostic Bracket$20 – $70 / part+60–100%3 weeks

Standard range reflects base fabrication cost. Medical premium covers certified material, ISO 13485 documentation, passivation, and cleanroom packaging. No minimum order — single prototypes accepted. Volume pricing applies at 25+ and 100+ parts.

Medical Sheet Metal FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about our medical sheet metal fabrication service at FIRMFG.

QIs your facility ISO 13485 certified for medical sheet metal?

Yes. Our quality management system is certified to ISO 13485:2016, the international standard for medical device quality systems. This certification covers every process from material procurement and design transfer through production, inspection, and traceability. We maintain controlled documentation, perform first article inspections to AS9102, and generate a complete Device History Record (DHR) for every medical order, retained for a minimum of 10 years.

QWhat biocompatible materials do you offer for medical parts?

We fabricate medical sheet metal parts from three primary biocompatible materials: 316L stainless steel (ASTM F138, implant grade for surgical instruments and patient-contact components), Titanium Ti-6Al-4V (ASTM F136, implant grade for long-term biocompatibility and osseointegration), and 304 stainless steel (for non-implant equipment housings and external components). All materials come with mill certificates including heat numbers, chemical composition, and mechanical properties.

QHow does material traceability work for medical parts?

Every coil and sheet of raw material is tracked from the mill through to the finished part. We maintain material certificates with heat numbers, chemical composition (C, Cr, Ni, Mo), and mechanical test results linked to ASTM F138 or F136 standards. Each production batch generates a Device History Record (DHR) that links the work order to material certs, process parameters, inspection results, operator signatures, and packaging lot numbers. This DHR is available to you for regulatory submissions and audits.

QDo you offer cleanroom packaging for medical parts?

Yes. Finished parts are cleaned, passivated per ASTM A967, and packaged in our ISO Class 8 (100,000) cleanroom environment. Parts are double-bagged in medical-grade peel pouches with sterilization indicators, then sealed in outer cartons labeled with lot/batch numbers and sterilization compatibility ratings (autoclave 134°C, EtO, gamma). Custom labeling and barcoding are available for direct integration into your inventory system.

QWhat is the minimum order quantity for medical sheet metal parts?

There is no strict minimum order quantity. We accept single-piece prototypes and small development batches, which are common in medical device R&D. A single-part medical prototype will incur the full cost of material certification, setup, and documentation, making the per-part price higher. Batch pricing becomes more cost-effective at 25+ parts, and production volumes of 100+ significantly reduce per-unit cost.

QWhat is the lead time for medical sheet metal parts?

Standard lead time is 2–3 weeks, which includes material procurement (certified 316L or titanium), fabrication (laser cutting, bending, welding), mandatory passivation (ASTM A967), inspection (FAI + DHR documentation), and cleanroom packaging. Expedited service of 7–10 days is available if certified material is in stock. Titanium parts and parts requiring electropolishing may take the full 3 weeks. We provide a confirmed lead time with every quote.
