SHEET METAL / PUNCHING

Sheet Metal Punching: CNC Turret Punch Press

CNC turret punching service for sheet metal: holes, slots, louvers, embosses, and custom forms. 200-600 SPM speed, 30+ auto-index stations, and forming capabilities that laser cutting cannot match. Cost-effective for mid to high volume.

Sheet Metal Punching: CNC Turret Punch Press

Sheet metal punching uses a CNC turret punch press to create holes, slots, louvers, and formed features in sheet metal at high speed. A rotating turret holding 30+ punch tools automatically selects and punches different shapes in sequence, achieving 200–600 strokes per minute — far faster than laser cutting for multi-hole parts. Punching also performs forming operations (louvers, embosses, countersinks) that laser cutting cannot.

At FIRMFG, our CNC turret punch handles material thicknesses from 0.5mm to 6mm in steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and brass. With 30+ auto-index stations, we can punch round holes, square slots, louvers, embosses, and custom forms in a single setup — no tool changes required between features.

Design Guidelines for Punching

Follow these DFM rules to optimize parts for turret punching. Proper hole sizing, spacing, and nesting reduce cost and prevent distortion.

DFM Tips for Punching

  • Use standard hole sizes (3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10mm) to avoid custom punch tooling cost.
  • Specify burr direction — burr-down (default) is preferred for cosmetic top surfaces.
  • Use perforated patterns with consistent hole size and spacing for optimal punching speed.
  • Nest parts to achieve 80%+ material utilization — reduce scrap and material cost.
  • Use louvers instead of separate vent strips — punching forms louvers in a single stroke.
  • Add embosses for stiffening thin panels without adding material or weight.

Punching vs Laser Cutting

Understanding when to choose punching over laser cutting helps you optimize cost, speed, and capability for your parts.

CriteriaPunchingLaser Cutting
Best ForMultiple holes, standard shapes, mid-high volumeComplex contours, custom shapes, low volume
Speed (Holes)200–600 holes/min (much faster)10–30 holes/min (sequential cutting)
Cost (Mid Volume)Lower (no per-hole time cost)Higher (priced by cutting time)
FlexibilityLimited to available punch shapesUnlimited (any shape programmable)
Material Thickness0.5–6mm0.3–20mm (broader range)
Edge QualitySlight burr on exit sideClean, no burr
Forms (louvers, embosses)Yes (formed in single stroke)No (cutting only, no forming)
Setup TimeTool change 15–30 minProgramming 5–10 min

Many parts benefit from both processes — we can laser cut the outline and punch the holes and louvers in a combined operation for optimal cost and capability.

Surface Finishing After Punching

Post-punch surface treatments remove burrs, enhance corrosion resistance, and improve appearance.

Deburring

Vibratory deburring removes punch burrs for smooth edges. Mandatory for handling safety and cosmetic parts.

Powder Coating

Most common finish for punched panels. Available in any RAL color. Learn more →

Plating/Anodizing

Zinc plating for steel, anodizing for aluminum, passivation for stainless steel.

What Drives Punching Cost?

Punching is priced by machine time, not per hole. Volume and material utilization are the primary cost drivers.

No Die Cost

Uses standard punch tools — no custom die required. Only custom shapes need custom tooling ($200–$500).

Priced by Time

Cost is based on machine time (200–600 SPM), not per hole. A sheet with 1000 holes costs the same as 10 holes if time is similar.

Volume Advantage

Per-part cost decreases significantly at 100+ sheets due to optimized nesting and batch processing.

Material Utilization

Smart nesting can save 10–30% material cost. We optimize sheet layout to maximize parts per sheet.

Cost by Complexity and Batch Size

Sheet ComplexityBatch SizeCost Per SheetLead Time
Simple (10–50 holes)1–10 sheets$15 – $402 – 3 days
Simple (10–50 holes)50+ sheets$5 – $155 – 7 days
Medium (50–200 holes)1–10 sheets$25 – $603 – 4 days
Medium (50–200 holes)50+ sheets$10 – $255 – 7 days
Complex (200+ holes)1–10 sheets$40 – $1003 – 5 days

Pricing includes CNC programming, punching, and basic deburring. Material and surface finishing are quoted separately. Batch discounts apply at 10+ sheets.

Sheet Metal Punching FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about our punching service at FIRMFG.

QWhat is the minimum hole diameter for punching?

The minimum hole diameter is equal to the material thickness (1:1 ratio). For example, on 2mm thick material, the minimum hole is 2mm. For 0.5mm material, holes as small as 0.5mm can be punched. Holes smaller than 1× thickness risk punch breakage and are better achieved by laser cutting. For optimal tool life and hole quality, we recommend 1.5× thickness as the practical minimum.

QWhat is the minimum spacing between punched holes?

Minimum hole-to-hole spacing should be at least 2× the material thickness to prevent distortion and web buckling between holes. For example, on 1mm material, holes should be at least 2mm apart edge-to-edge. Closely spaced holes can cause the material web to bulge or distort during punching. For perforated patterns with high hole density, we use step punching (punching every other hole first) to distribute stress evenly.

QCan you punch louvers and ventilation slots?

Yes, louver punching is one of the key capabilities of CNC turret punching. Louvers are formed in a single stroke using a specialized louver tool that cuts and forms the metal upward or downward in one motion. Standard louver sizes range from 20mm to 100mm long. We can also punch embosses (for stiffening), countersinks (for flush fasteners), and extruded holes (for thread tapping). These forming operations are a key advantage of punching over laser cutting, which can only cut through — not form.

QWhen should I choose punching over laser cutting?

Choose punching when: (1) Your part has many holes or standard-shaped cutouts — punching is 10–20× faster per hole than laser. (2) You need formed features like louvers, embosses, or countersinks — laser cannot form, only cut. (3) Your volume is 100+ sheets — per-sheet cost is lower than laser due to speed. Choose laser cutting when: (1) You need complex contours or custom shapes not available as standard punches. (2) Your volume is low (1–10 sheets) — laser has no tool setup time. (3) You need burr-free edges — laser produces no burr.

QWhat is the minimum batch size for punching?

We have no minimum order — even a single sheet can be punched. However, per-sheet cost is higher for small batches due to machine setup and tool selection (15–30 minutes). At 10+ sheets, setup time is amortized and per-sheet cost drops significantly. At 100+ sheets, we optimize nesting for maximum material utilization and batch processing for the lowest per-part cost. For prototyping (1–5 sheets), consider laser cutting instead — it has no setup time and is more flexible for design changes.

QWhat is the lead time for sheet metal punching?

Standard lead time is 2–3 business days for simple parts (10–50 holes) in small batches. Complex parts with 200+ holes or forming operations (louvers, embosses) take 3–5 days. For batches of 50+ sheets, lead time is 5–7 days depending on complexity. Rush service (1-day turnaround) is available for simple hole patterns in standard materials. Custom punch tooling (for non-standard shapes) adds 1–2 weeks for tool manufacturing.
